Case study - delivering added value in benefit statement communication
Background
Prior to us working with this telecommunications client, they provided their employees with a one-page, black and white benefit statement, computer-generated via their pension administrators.
Objective
Buck was tasked with revamping the benefit statement so that its visual appeal was improved substantially, the educational content was increased, and new key pension data was made available.
Approach
After reviewing the existing benefit statements, we developed key messages and the appropriate language for the employee base, along with devising a visual identity that built on the newly rebranded pension literature that we had already developed with the client.
Results
5,000 A4 6-page, roll-fold full-colour personalised benefit statements were sent out on budget and on schedule. They included:
- additional information on total individual contributions for the year and to date
- a personalised illustration (SMPI) of the pension payable at NRD (age 60)
- details on the investment performance of the plan’s fund
- information promoting pension awareness and available help options.
In an online questionnaire sent to all employees, 94% said that they liked the look of the new statement, and 88% said that the statement was easy to understand. Employees also expressed an increased understanding of the pension fund and enhanced ability to plan future contributions.
The success of this project, allied to positive employee feedback, has resulted in this client making an ongoing commitment to improving reward communication.
